I haven't heard anything recently, but there were rumours floating round before Christmas that the race might not happen because the organisers were having problems with the French tax authorities.
Steve and I are just back from publicly waving 1.1mile loops of our house (around the moat ) - outside! Finished about 19k on easy pace to finish at 20 minutes past midnight!

Now sat in bed with tea and a very nice fruity muffin! Time for a quick nap before the 1 hour run first thing with a few 400m intervals at 4 min mile pace (fantasy)!

Night night!

Edited to say: Slacko just told me I should of typed "while you lot were all sleeping we were out slogging the gun toting streets of 'middle bletchley'!!

It is actually easy and not really hilly at all.

if the wind blows then the first miles will be tough going, then after a little shelter you'll hit the Ripple.

The Ripple is not as tough as some say, it;s harder on lap 2 of the Vit but no problem at all on it's own.

The first hill is ok, just shortish and get over it.

careful on the descent if it's windy, it will be a cross wind and the descent is fast.

The second looks much much worse than it is as you look at it over a valley once you crest hill 1. It kicks a bit near the bottom so it may scare you at first, but have faith, it levels out 1/3 of the way up and it's just a drag to the top.

Then you descend again you hit the 3rd hill, which if you carry your speed well is over before you can say "what Ripple?"

You can push pretty hard as as soon as you've crested hill 3 you are down hill and turning left onto the fastest part of the course. its hammer time here. Again if windy it will be highest gear on flat fast smooth roads.

Once you turn off the main road it gets a bit rolling, but no real speed sappers, power over any small humps and keep it going. careful in the village of Ketton for parked cars and doors opening, but really it should also be hammer time through here.

Shortly after you turn left onto cement hill (named as there is a cement works to your left!). Again, more of a drag, but it can go on a bit. Steady climbing here and save a bit for the final run in.

At the top turn left onto the main road and heading home.

The course generally catches any wind that is about and the main road home is where you will feel it most. You always seem to be into the headwind here and it can sap you quite quickly, so steady as she goes and you'll be fine. it;s slightly rolling as well with a few false flats and drags. nothing hard, but with the wind they can smart a bit.

Descend into Empingham as fast as you can and keep your momentum up the hill past the pub. Push on this hill but not too hard as you've got a nasty little exposed drag after you leave the village. Again wind will depend on how hard you push that climb, if wind lay off a bit, if not give it some you will pass quite a few if you ride it aggressively, but be careful they don't take you back when you die on the drag.

Oh so quickly you will be descending into Whitwell and the end of the course. Again, fast descent with a short steepish climb to the entrance back to transition. you can push that hill as you have a nice downhill roll back to bike racking and plenty of time toget your feet out of shoes and ready for run No2.

Have fun, I'll be there supporting Mrs R before bike racing in the arvo.

Just wanted to say I disagree with Jim that HR is a better measure of running than pace. I think if you do most of your running in similar conditions (same terrain mostly), then pace is much more useful than HR. It's all about handling your data consistently -- and let's face it, most runners have a small set of regular runs they do -- so if you can keep things consistent, you will find that using pace is a much better estimate of effort and fatigue.
Unexpectedly the family are going abroad to see the 'she devil' (mother in law ) so I am free 10th and 11th April so toying with coming up north for a recce.

Had originally planned to just turn up on the day and 'do it' but maybe better the devil you know?

Anyone else planning to be out that weekend?

Don't worry Slow Elvis I will be part of the bringing it home possie if last weekends' ride was anything to go by.
I predict I will get lapped before the run.

Hmmm another ride around on the 10th or 11th April, sounds likely.
I wounder if my average time would beat an 8hr bike

I am trying, did a hill bike spin class at gym today.
Longest swim so far 1km - 20mins
Longest run so far 18mile - 2:30hrs
Longest bike so far 91km - 4hrs +

I've been employing the Run/Walk (10/1) strategy since Jan and am in training for the VLM as well as Roth in July.

When I started, my HR would drop about 3 beats/min during the walk and struggled to get much less than a 13:30-14:00min/mile pace.

Currently, I'm averaging a 12:25 walking pace with an 8-10beat drop in HR during the walk phase. Last Sunday, I did 15miles in 2:14 and averaged an 8:52min/mile pace over the whole run so am pretty pleased with the results.

On the downside, I'm still embarassed by the whole "walking" thing. I'm always on the lookout for people who might know me so tend to go on routes where I won't see anyone or very early/late when no-one else is around. How I'm going to feel walking after 10mins on the VLM will be very interesting but am determined to do it.

Cheers....F
Good to hear about all the course recce's going on. A bit too far from Bristol to join in for a day. I am going to wait until the day and be surprised (either much hillier than people have been saying or maybe pleasantly surprised at how flat it is??), I should get to know the course by the 3rd lap.

Training is going carp, with no real running since October but not panicking yet. Hoping to get going in April and the lighter nights and morning will be something to look forward to. You can't beat a 5.30am start for a long bike ride.
this was my first ever oly distance last year. iirc i came last*

the bike route isn't that complicated, but like most courses it's worth a recce by car or bike before hand.

Last year they'd just resurfaced around the Chandlers cross area and it was still a bit 'stony', which could've caused lack of traction. This has now worn in and is an ok surface to ride on.

For this year watch out for the stretch of road from bucks hill leading into Chipperfield. The winter weather has not been kind and it is very pot holed.

The hill at the end (can't remember the name of it) is a killer (if you've never ridden further than 40 km before).

* because of all the people that didn't do the right number of loops to start off with (well that's my excuse and I'm sticking to it )

I rode the 2009 B2, 2010 B2 and 2010 B12 one after the other.. it was an ideal opportunity to directly compare the bikes..

The two B2's are awesome bikes.. very fast and not much to distinguish between them. You either like the SRAM or the DA, and the preference for the red 2009 or stunning white 2010 colour is personal. They both come with Zipp 808 and 404s.

I went for the B12 with Ultegra because to me it didn't feel a whole lot different but at less that half the cost of the B2 it is great value. Much of the cost of the B2 comprises the Zipps and the SRAM Red. I can buy the B12 with a spare set of race wheels for less than the B2... so, best of both worlds and the race wheels won't get damaged in training.

That was the theory..... I pick it up tomorrow. Fingers crossed that I made the right decision.

Yeah but last year they had THE best ever marshall on that roundabout ensuring everyone went the right way every time (and I had to shout after many numpties who seemed to think "straight ahead" meant "turn left" )

Mr Mash and I bike that course a fair bit and it is challenging with a few cheeky hills in it and a fast descent straight onto a roundabout!
