did my monthly 1000m time trial this am and finished in 19m10s, which is a PB for me for the distance. Very Happy felt very comfortable all the way through - aerobically the last month's sessions have really helped. really focussing on my catch and feel i'm swimming better than last year. let a faster swimmer go through twice, so probably could take 4-5secs off that time - maybe next month Smile

my first hiccup in my training so far. the long run on weds took more out of me than i thought. only an extra 10mins, but after another decent session on the turbo on thu am, by thu pm i was feeling tired and had lost the buzz i had been carrying to that point. ended up cutting short my gym session and went home 20min early.

long swim the next day was fine though, all felt good, but i think the problem came coming out of the pool rushing for the train. only put on one layer under thin jacket and i think that with my body recovering from the earlier sessions, i was that much weaker and caught a chill.

my lunchtime, i had a sore throat and could feel it coming. friday night was bad, blowing my nose the whole time. awake alot. got up and watched telly at 3am. felt #@?#.

on the positive side, i cancelled my planned 2hr bike on sat, and wasn't too attached to my training schedule! did my best to rest on sat (despite breaking down on the M25) and sun and the good news is that i seem to have kicked it. Smile

thanks to gordo though for his 'if in doubt, leave it out' advice. first time i've paid attention!

slightly more volume this week, picking up the weights slightly. swimming feeling good, pretty comfortable. think i'm getting somewhere with the drills, part sculling, which i think is improving my propulsion. overall feeling good, but noticed my threshold run last sunday on tue.

mon2 - bike (turbo steady)
tue3 - swim (drills) + gym
wed4 - swim (steady, main set 4x200) + long run easy (1.10hr)
thu5 - bike (turbo steady/drills) + gym
fri6 - swim (steady, 3x400) + run (easy 40)
sat7 - bike (easy 1.45 - freezing cold)
sun8 - DAY OFF

total time - 11h55m (inc 1h38m commuting, 1h30m gym)

skiing as cross training

i took my HR monitor out for my ski on sunday and the results were pretty disappointing. for most runs unless i really thrashed it, my HR was averaging around 120, so only just aerobic. calories used was tragically low. looked like only 25% of the time was spent actually exercising.

did get my HR up to 155 when i went super-speed style. probably would have acheived this in the off piste on friday when i was skiing increasingly heavy powder.

reckon the main benefits were as a weights equivalent session on my legs, and a certain degree of interval training and altitude benefits. and of course that it's great fun!

went for a run on weds even in chamonix. absolutely fantastic. it was about -8C, but wrapped up warm and headed from lez praz up in argentiere direction, down to the level crossing, over to the petit balcon sud adn back down along the river into town.

all paths snow covered, sun hitting the tops of the aiguille and drus, turning them orange. this was perfect. 1h03mins, 9km. beats london air and views hands down!
