running in the dark

on gordo's (author of 'going long') advice, i've decided to do my long run midweek and my long bike at the weekends, so last night headed home along the river path from putney to chiswick bridge and then in to richmond.

only problem, the tide must have been high shortly before, because the path was a quagmire, and given there is no lighting around, i had to tread carefully. it put an extra 5min on my time, which is no big, but my running shoes are now well black.

it's time to replace them anyway. thanks to andys of this forum, my training spreadsheet calculates the miles i've done in each pair of trainers and these ones are now cooked. i'll be heading to jono at SBR in windsor just after xmas to get a new pair of NB 1060.

don't get me wrong on this run though. i love it. very quiet (started at 6.40pm), not sure i passed a single person from hammersmith to barnes. just a few rowers sculling along the river. it's very zen Wink

MTB v. Road bike

Sunday i took the MTB round Richmond Park for a couple of laps. In the days when I did 'unstructured training' this was one of my regular bits of exercise, but since I've been doing tri, i've cut it out in favour of 'proper' cycling. I've started again on the turbo (indoor trainer) and just building up on that, but as I know I've got a long time to get through and many miles to go, I'm trying to vary it as much as I can, hence the MTB.

I loved it. I still know the trail really well, so knew the best lines, when to change gear etc. You get a lot muddier than on the road, but that's half the fun Very Happy

swimming long, driving small

swimming has never been my thing. hence i'm trying to work on it. today i hit 1900m which is my longest since the cowman in august and it felt fine. i know my technique is still way from there, but feel pretty happy with this for early in my prep period.

on the way out from the pool i noticed a volvo 4x4, so stuck one of my fake 'poor choice of car' parking tickets (from www.stopurban4x4s.org.uk) on it. i was just saddling up to cycle off, when the owner strode over and asked me if i'd like it back. must have just been coming out when i put it on! we had a small exchange, well mannered, about the CO2 and pollution impact of his car, i'd say i just scraped ahead in. will he buy different next time? i'm not sure. but will he think about it more, i reckon Wink

The start...

I thought I'd set up this blog so that my friends and family could see what I'm up to and join me on this very exciting journey that should hopefully take me to the finish of Ironman Switzerland in July of next year.

I guess I should attempt to explain why I'm doing this. I guess there's no other reason than to learn more about myself. How I react when I'm challenged, what I'm capable of, to extend my limits.

I've enjoyed triathlon for 10+ years now. In 2003 I decided I liked it enough to do six races. By 2004, I managed 10 races, including my first Half Ironman. This year, another Half Ironman and my first marathon. I kind of feel I need to do the Ironman, and then that's it, back to HIM, Olys and Sprints, with the odd marathon. But I need to get the IM out of my system. So here we go...
