Me

In 2002 i ruptured my ACL and MCL playing football and was told i would not be having an op on the NHS and could never play again (along with many other things!)... After doing some freeride / downhill MTB'ing for a couple of years, I starting to swim again in August 07 and thought, i cycle, i swim...all i need to do is run a little..how about earning a little money for charity and sign up for the London Oly! I went on to enjoy my first season in tri so much I have done a 2nd, gone sub 2:30 for an Olympic distance got round an ironman and am still going!
When not training I can be seen at the Boleyn Ground being a long suffering season ticket holder at the 1966 World cup winners West Ham Rolling Eyes

Tunbridge Wells Half Marathon - 2nd March 2014

I awoke on Sunday to a rather pleasant looking day. The sun was shining, and seemed far better than the previous year. This was always going to be a test of fitness, but I had a plan. Go out at sub 1:45 pace, but if it looked in doubt or needed me to bury myself for 3 miles at the end, Id back off as its only 6 weeks until London.
I made my way to the start pens for a 9am start but struggled to get to where I wanted to be and before Id settled the gun went off. The first mile was mildly undulating and I went through mile one in 7:47, a nice relaxed start. The second mile was much the same with a bit more down and up and I had now settled. I went through 2 miles in 7:59. I knew the first 5 miles of the course was a negative incline so was fast but the plan was to get through halfway just under target pace and then push the big hills in the second half. I did that well and continued to plod on going through 3 miles in 23:35 and 5 miles in 39:27. After 5 miles you take the turn from Penshurst and the first of the big climbs comes shortly after. At half a mile, its not long but its steep and I wasnt climbing well. Went through the mile in 8:45 that included this, so a minute down on my planned pace. My legs were holding out though which was a good sign, but the lack of real speed work was showing. I hit halfway in around 52:15 so bang on target and thought I needed to just dig in for this next hill and push on. Game on. The next climb, Spring Hill, is over a mile and also quite steep.
I have a quick pee stop near the top but I had slowed, an 8:56 and a 9:30, although that was due to the stop. I continued but with my running now at 8:15min/miles the thoughts of a sub 1:45 are starting to fade and I find myself in the dilemma. The 10th mile I went 8:15 so decided to keep at this pace for the next 3 miles. Last year I averaged 7:45s for these but I decided i wasnt going to make 1:45 so now was a marathon paced effort for 3 miles and save the legs for training the following week. An easy 8:13, 8:23 and final mile of 7:52 were pleasing considering the effort levels and I crossed the finish line, with energy to spare in 1:48:05. Only 1:20 off my pb and Id backed off. In hindsight I could have pbd, but Id have been spent this week, and Id have still missed my target so Im happy, pleased and dont have sore legs this week either. Its looking OK for London. Just a couple long runs to go!
