Who on earth is Gus?

North Yorkshire born & bred, but spent five years in the dark, wet depths of Cumbria as a teenager. Loved those fells!

Newcastly Poly for one year, but got kicked out for enjoying myself too much, then North Staffs Poly (yuk) for 3 years studying Estate Management. Ended up as a Chartered Investment Surveyor for 10 years, living in London, Leeds and finally Glasgow (lived overlooking Loch Lomond.... most beautiful place on earth).

Career-changed during my mid-life crisis at 30: Threw away a high-flying career to go to Plymouth Uni for 1 year then spent the next 5 years working offshore all round the world in the oil industry.

Back onshore in 2003: Marketing Manager in Norwich, then Geneva, then Lowestoft (wow, glamorous!). Currently VP Africa for an oil exploration company in Surrey. Talking of glamorous, these days my regular trips are to Nigeria, Eq Guinea and Angola... now I bet that's got you envious.

I have a lovely French wife with a Gallic temperament and a gorgeous 2yr old daughter who speaks better French than me.

Got into Tri's after my 53yr old boss in Geneva shamed me into doing one after he completed the Geneva. Once started, quickly hooked! My current 'mid-life crisis' as my dear wife keeps referring to it as.

Just a quick one to wish everyone a

Happy New Year!

I saw the new year in last night with a brief visit to the TT Chat forum, where I passed a few minutes with PatriciaCamille, Jibberjim, AndyS, Cenzo, smiler666, the Iain and Cleo. Good to see a nice crowd in there for the 'big moment' and say a very relieved goodbye to 2009.

Here's to a better 2010 for everyone.

Just a brief update....

I decided to up-sticks at the end of November and went with my mother to stay at my parent's house in the South of France for Xmas. As nothing's really happening on the job front, and it's winding down for the year, I thought I may as well find some sunshine... not quite as glamorous as it sounds, but it's better than moping around the house feeling sorry for myself in Yorkshire!

The lawyers are still chasing for payment - I'm trying to avoid them at the moment still trying to work out what the hell I'm going to do to come up with the money. I looked into bankruptcy, but the longer term implicatios of doing that are just not where I want to be... so may end up selling my body on a street corner or something! (OK, that may take a few years to raise a few pennies...)

On the training front, with my life still so much on hold with being out of work, it's been nigh on impossible to get into any sort of training routine which is driving me mad with frustration. Also, changing location has meant I need to find new facilities at each location. I couldn't fit the bike in the car to bring down to France which is a serious PITA.

The good news is, though, behind the house here in France, is a wacking great hill, behind which is an even bigger hill... joy! So I've been running quite a bit now up some really good tracks, through the forests and rocks in perfect running conditions; clear blue sky, warm sun, 11 degrees air temp. Gorgeous! Also with stunning views over the Mediterranean and St Tropez... life maybe pretty sh1t at the moment but when I've run an hour up the hill, endorphines flooding the system and bathed in winter sunshine with a view like that... for those brief moments in time I feel the weight off my shoulders and almost a few seconds of optimism.

I'm trying to stick to my good old Maffetone method, but this hill is pretty serious so I'm having to walk 95% of it to keep below threshold. No worries, though, as I just feel it doing good in my bum muscles and calves, which have been pretty neglected in the past, training in the flat lands.

The first time I ran the hill, I thought sod the Maffetone, and spent most of the ascent in Z4 - put it down to a route 'recce' run. Since then, though, been pretty good and stayed (just about) in Z2. Distance has been anything between 7 and 10km with about 1000' of ascent. However, beginning of the week I extended onto the second hill behind, taking it to 10.4km with 1500' of ascent. The ultimate aim is to do the second summit which will be around 16km - ascent maybe around 2500' (tbc).

Really nice running country, great cross-country running. However the weekends I have to be careful as the hunters are out, armed to the teeth looking for 'Sangliers' - wild boar. As I run through the forest I see these guys quite regularly, holding shotguns and rifles, and hear shots every now and again. Quite worrying as these Frenchies are pretty trigger-happy so I have to cough loudly and make lots of 'human' noises as I run to ensure I don't end up in their trophy cabinet.

A 'sanglier':

These sanglier are actually pretty dangerous themselves - apparently our local mayor was killed by one some time ago, so I have to be a little wary as I'm running... Shocked

I went for my first French swim today in a local 25mpool (Sainte Maxime). For some reason I can't quite fathom, the law in French pools is no swimming shorts, budgie smugglers only... urgghhhhh! So I now feel like a 70's pornstar in my new Speedos. No ladies swooned as I appeared from the changing rooms, sadly. As for the French in the pool... well, they seem to spend most of the time gossiping in the shallow end, getting in the bloody way. All these hairy-chested poseurs trying to look athletic in front of the women... as a measure of their prowess, I was the fastest in the pool as I thrashed out 2000m. As I'm one of the slowest swimmers I know, you get the idea of how bad these people were...

The good news was that I improved my last 2000m time by nearly 2 minutes, despite a couple of weeks lay-off. Felt good, that.

Aside from that, been feeling pretty down recently, as I'm really missing the children. My eldest daughter (4) doesn't want to talk to me on the phone, and even said 'I don't love you' the other day... which hurt. She's trying to adjust to the new situation and doesn't understand why I'm not there. She's also speaking French as her first language now already... It takes a lot of emotional self-discipline to get through this in one piece, to be honest.

I'm getting worried about the Norseman as well; I'm supposed to be starting my Don Fink 30 week program in January, but still no prospect of work, so I don't know how the hell I'm going to be able to get into that. I was planning to do the O-til-O in 2010 as well but I've decided to shelve that unless I miraculously find work in the next few weeks.

I need a flipping job quickly, so I can rebuild my life... amazing how much of one's life depends on work. Out of work is just so mentally sapping.

Anyway... as per my favourite quote of the moment...

"Keep going".

Thanks guys for your kind messages and advice. It really does keep me going psychologically when I read your messages - counts for a lot. It's a great forum this, so many decent people who are there in times of need!
Cobbie - sorry I missed you in Halifax. Hope we can hook up another time. I really hope I can meet some of you other guys next year at some races or get-togethers, once I find myself a job and a new location.

I just had another bill in from the solicitors this morning: 10,000.

I don't have the money to pay this.

The money I have settled to pay my ex-wife in the divorce is all the money I have in the world. Now I need to find another 10,000 to pay the solicitors.

Oh sh*t, I really don't know what to do. I can't borrow it cos I don't have a job.

My ex-wife has not only taken all my money that took 20+ years to save up, she has now landed me in serious financial difficulties. I have a bill for 10,000 and nothing to pay it with. I really just don't know what to do. I'm wondering if I should declare myself bankrupt?

Shocked

Well, the confirmation of my entry into Norseman was the best news I've had for a long while.

Trouble is, with my life a little in limbo, I'm finding it very hard to get into any sort of routine for training. The job hunting is just dire - still no sign of anything. A couple of interviews but they just never seem to progress any further (the divorce seems actually to have acted against me, it seems, as they are not convinced my head is 'clear' enough to take on a role Evil or Very Mad ).

So, having now moved back in with the folks I'm trying to work out what facilities I have at hand to re-invigorate the training.

I've mapped out a 10km course which I'm now running regularly; sadly, flat as blasted Norfolk (where I trained for the 2008 Norseman) so that will only serve short-term. Performance so far has varied, but I'm seeing some gentle improvement on times - yesterday's performance was very good, had a real Mojo boost as I felt fired up for the Norseman, but I suspect my HR was a little higher than it should've been.

Still, psychologically it was a moral boost and I'm going to try to increase the distance to 8 miles in a week's time.

Plan is to keep the 'base', distance training as the priority up until late December, before then throwing in some more serious tempo sessions, ready for the start of the 30 week program in January.

I went swimming on Thursday - first time in the pool in 6 months.

OUCH Shocked .

2000m in 56 mins - I haven't been that slow for over a year, and I was sore for days afterwards. Still, not unexpected after such a long lay-off. I was actually impressed I still managed to complete the distance, though - that was the goal for the day.

Will try to swim twice a week now, just keep building up a base doing long, slow distances before starting drilling/harder sessions in the 30-week program.

Cycling; nothing still. I need a skewer for the turbo to mount my bike (I brought my beautiful Orca with me to my parents, put the Trek in storage), together with the Imagic so all set to go... although I thought I was until I realised I'd put my cycle shoes in storage too Evil or Very Mad .

Now have the dilemna what to do; do I buy a really cheap pair for 30 to tide me over, or splash out and get a decent pair in the end-of-season sales that will last me for years....

My existing, stored, ones are cheapish, middle of the road Northwaves, a few years old now and could do with replacing/upgrading. However, being out of work isn't the best time to be splashing out!

mmmm.

Anyway, I need to get my proverbial in gear, cos I have to get on the turbo and do some training!

I was back in France last week, visiting the children for the first time since their departure.... Sad Was very tough. My youngest daughter's 1st birthday was last Friday, so it was pretty hearbreaking seeing her walking around for the first time... I brought out the video camera, but my dear ex-wife and her mother then started shouting at me that they were going to call the police cos I didn't have their permission to film in their flat... God is there any justice in this frigging world? Mad Evil or Very Mad

The good news is, I'm moving on. It's hearbreaking, but life goes on. If I could only find a damn job then things could really move on...

Onwards and upwards Smile

Thanks to the 'quote' thread a while back, I loved one quotation that has been ringing in my head and is serving me well:

"When going through Hell, keep going"

Perfect. My head's down, and I'm still moving!

RESPONSES:

dr dre - That's the plan!

Mrs Slacko
- Thanks, I'm just a little pleased, as you can guess...

Bluepoolshark - Black T is now debateable with the new cut-off rules... had a chance before but now I have to ensure there are 40 people slower than me! May have to resort to suspicious tactics! B-race... still thinking about DITL..

Sue - Absolutely, focus is vital in moving forward, so thank heavens for this race

Carlito - cheers!

racer - good, isn't it? Screenshot from '300'

Cobbie - Sorry, just seen your message - I'll PM you.

JesseD - thanks for the kind words, time is the greatest healer....

Well, back again after another absence.

It's been a really rough few weeks again, as the wife finally departed this country with my two little girls back to Paris. I also received the September invoice from my solicitors: 15,000, taking the total now to over 40,000. Had a really low time for the last couple of weeks as I had to clear out the house, including the playroom - heartbreaking is an understatement. Took me two days to clear that room as I could only manage 10 minute stretches before I had to stop, breaking down.

I tried so hard to settle the finances with the wife amicably but she refused, so we met in court again Wednesday this week. "I don't want your money" is the phrase she told me over and over again for months, if not years. That wasn't what happened on Wednesday...

She came out, all guns blazing, wanting everything. Pensions, savings, maintenance, the lot. "I don't want your money" pah. Sadly I was wrong about her and everyone else was right... how naive I had been.

Anyway, to cut a long story short we reached a settlement and she has basically cleaned me out. She arrived penniless into our marriage 5 years ago, and she is now a very wealthy woman, not to mention in possession of my two children as well.

At the start of this year, I had enough money to almost buy a decent sized house cash. Now, I only have enough to buy a frigging Wendy House (and that's no exaggeration). I only hope she uses my money sensibly and doesn't fritter it away...

I wanted to go see the children this weekend - it's been 3 weeks since she left - but she refused. "I'll never stop you seeing the children" was another refrain oft stated by her in the last few months... like hell. According to the Court Order I get a week at the end of October with them, so looking forward to that, but that will have been 6 weeks without seeing my children. My youngest daughter has started walking and has had two new teeth... but I missed all that, never seen it... who am I? Only the frigging father.

Anyway, enough of the divorce rant - there's nothing more boring than someone else's divorce so I'll stop going on Very Happy I'm not the first person to go through this #@?# and certainly won't be the last.

I finally moved out of our family house on Wednesday this week, and after attending court, then headed up North and now, at the grand old age of 43, moved back in with my parents.

Ronnie Corbett in 'Sorry' springs to mind Very Happy .

Job hunting is difficult - very little out there at the moment, particularly as I'm trying to find something that gives me at least some access to Paris to see the kids regularly. (Also a little dis-incentivising as at least 20% of my net salary now has to go in maintenance Mad ).

Still, all part of the great rebuilding of my life.... now the kids and finances are near-as-damnit settled I can finally move on in my life and start over.

The family and friends have rallied around magnificently - you really see how good people can be in these times of crisis. So THANK YOU to all of them (and of course, you guys, who have been wonderfully supportive!).

So, it's all character building. I'm back in business with a blank canvas. To celebrate, I blew the dust off the old trainers and went for a run today. 10km in 1hr 7 mins.... terrible, but who cares. I haven't done a thing since July so today was a 'blowing the dust' off run. Kept the heart rate low, ignored the pains in my cardio-vascular system screaming at me and now feel ok.

The training begins!

2010 I have Norseman and O-til-O... a BIG year in so many ways for me Smile

RESPONSES:

dr dre - Actually no, the health has suffered as well. Been waking up every morning for the last 4 months in agony. Had scans... can't see what the problem is... I'm hoping it's just stress.

Loopmusic - thanks - and get yourself on the Norseman start list, can't recommend the race enough!

Vickich - thanks, appreciate the support!

Sue - I do appreciate having you guys, as above, it has really, really helped. So thank you!

Bluepoolshark -Thanks Pete, may take you up on that! Good to hear things are moving on for you as well.

Mrs Slacko - Yep, in recovery mode now. Managed to get all the crap behind me now (hopefully!) so it all starts from here...

Cobbie - I'm hanging in there, thanks... and hope to see you on the Norseman next year!

Oh dear - slipped to page 2 again!

Not surprising as the training still remains pretty low-level. I did my 8.1 miler again the other day, and my cardio-vascular system felt awful. I was a couple of minutes slower than the previous week, but I did take it a bit easier - and interestingly the muscles and joints felt better than the previous 2 outings so hopefully I'm rebuilding some of the atrophied muscles slowly but surely.

Still need to step up the training though. The good news is that mentally I'm starting to get back into the right frame of mind. Light is potentially appearing at the end of the tunnel so suddenly triathlon is starting to re-appear in my life as a priority!

The incentive of Norseman 2010 and potentially O-til-O next year is really perking up my spirit.

(Can't believe someone's also put up a Norseman 2011 thread already! If I succeed at Norseman next year then I hope to be at 2011, but this time repaying Pete (Bluepoolshark) for his support in 2010 by supporting him for his hopefully second black T in 2011).

On the domestic front, we had our day in Court last Monday....

Interesting. The wife's barrister was a dreadful French woman, mutton dressed as lamb is the best way I could describe her physical appearance. From the moment she refused to shake my hand I disliked her, and her performance as a barrister was, frankly, criminally negligent. I actually almost felt a little sorry for my wife. This woman was not a family law specialist, not least any obvious knowledge in our complicated situation. My barrister ended up having to explain to her on several occasions some of the legal fundamentals in Family Law.

Great advantage for me, in theory. In practice it meant we could have achieved an awful lot more in our negotations before going before the judge if she'd known what she was doing.

Anyway, things went well for me - the Judge (bless 'er) quickly sussed out the situation and despite my wife's dreadful barrister pushing the her to the point of rudeness the Judge was having none of it. She clearly sympathised with my situation (ie being shafted) and applied a major brake on the wife's steamroller.

To cut a long story short, the wife has dropped all her nasty (and untrue Evil or Very Mad ) allegations from all legal proceedings so at last we can proceed in a more normal and civil manner and resolve this hopefully quickly now.

What a mess.

We're trying to discuss the finances as well... god this really p*sses me off. For the last god-knows how many years I've been scrimping and saving every penny I've earned, and received from birthays & Christmas's etc to boost the life savings to put down a deposit for a house. Now, as those who've been through this process themselves will know, she is going to fleece me for a very large portion of that. Despite contributing absolutely b*gger all to the pot (even when she was working) and, arguably, contributing b*gger all as a 'good' wife, after just 5 years of marriage she's taking away my children and the lion's share of my small life savings.

Evil or Very Mad Evil or Very Mad Evil or Very Mad Evil or Very Mad Evil or Very Mad

Anyway, sorry to rant to you guys, but god it so upsets me! It's taken me so long to save this lot up, lots of sacrifices, no fancy holidays etc...and now I'm going to be back to where I was many years ago - with next to nothing, having to start all over again.

Oh well... calm myself... think of all that training and racing I can do now..... actually that is one nice thought I had the other day - I can plan my 2010 (and onwards) race calendar with no fear or hassle of trying to tiptoe around an unreasonable wife and her demands.... joy. All being well, I hope to improve my triathlon to another level over the coming years.

Every cloud really does have a silver lining Smile

REPLIES:

dr dre - Thanks mate, as above, things went well at last!

Sue - In fact the Judge has now ordered us to do Mediation, although it's probably a bit late for that now. I'd tried to persuade my wife 2 months ago to do it, she refused Evil or Very Mad . Would've saved us (ie me) thousands.

Who on earth is this Gus anyway ?

After being VP Africa for an oil exploration company in Surrey the recession kicked me out and sitting twiddling my thumbs!

I had an awful French, gold-digging wife who developed mad cow disease, divorced me after just 5 years and walked away with my two baby daughters a very wealthy woman, leaving me facing bankruptcy. Sadly we learn by our mistakes.

Got into Tri's after my 53yr old boss in Geneva shamed me into doing one after he completed the Geneva. Once started, quickly hooked!
