Who on earth is Gus?

North Yorkshire born & bred, but spent five years in the dark, wet depths of Cumbria as a teenager. Loved those fells!

Newcastly Poly for one year, but got kicked out for enjoying myself too much, then North Staffs Poly (yuk) for 3 years studying Estate Management. Ended up as a Chartered Investment Surveyor for 10 years, living in London, Leeds and finally Glasgow (lived overlooking Loch Lomond.... most beautiful place on earth).

Career-changed during my mid-life crisis at 30: Threw away a high-flying career to go to Plymouth Uni for 1 year then spent the next 5 years working offshore all round the world in the oil industry.

Back onshore in 2003: Marketing Manager in Norwich, then Geneva, then Lowestoft (wow, glamorous!). Currently VP Africa for an oil exploration company in Surrey. Talking of glamorous, these days my regular trips are to Nigeria, Eq Guinea and Angola... now I bet that's got you envious.

I have a lovely French wife with a Gallic temperament and a gorgeous 2yr old daughter who speaks better French than me.

Got into Tri's after my 53yr old boss in Geneva shamed me into doing one after he completed the Geneva. Once started, quickly hooked! My current 'mid-life crisis' as my dear wife keeps referring to it as.

Sick of making excuses to myself, I dragged myself out for a run yesterday. It's really been a struggle recently cos I still haven't really fully shaken off this bug that hit me over 6 weeks ago.

I'm waking up every morning in agony in my back/bottom of the lungs area - really wierd and just a little scarey (cos linking it to the weight loss....). Been to the docs and he is a little baffled. Can't work out if it's muscular/skeletal or something more internal/sinister. (I bought an expensive mattress about a year ago but I've never been happy with it so wonder if it's anything to do with that). Otherwise it still feels like this bug has worked its way through different parts of my body week after week, causing inexplicable, and excruciating, pain to each part in turn.

Anyway, "sod it" thinks I, "I'll just run off the pain". So the run actually went pretty well - HR was high, as it usually is now after my long lay-off. I still felt ok all the way round, better than 2 weeks ago, and as I passed the point where I would normally deviate to do my 10 miler, I was tempted to go for the longer route... but sense prevailed.

I also notice, now that summer is upon us, that my running style has one problematic flaw - I run with my mouth wide open. Summer round these parts means I end up with mouthfuls of flies as I run through the woods. mmmm, mid-race nutrition.

I came in a little sore, but satisfied, particularly as I knocked 2.5 mins off 2 weeks ago. Looking back at my times earlier this year over the same course, I haven't lost as much fitness as I thought, although missing my mid-week tempo running has meant my HR remains stubbornly high. It took me a long time to break through my HR plateau, suddenly dropping 10bpm for the same speed, which at the time was fantastic. Now I'm back up to the previous level so it'll be some time before I'm back to that level again (need to get my life sorted first so I can get back into a normal routine of training).

Watched Ironman France this morning on Eurosport - a race I've got my eye on for my first 'official' Ironman once I've hopefully wrapped up Norseman. Inspiring stuff, although 8hrs 30m for the winner remains in the super league! I was pleased to see the last man over the line made it onto the coverage - that's more my goal!

A quick update on the divorce front: we're in Court on Monday for our first hearing... I'll let you know how that goes. I got my latest bill from the solicitors this week - I could buy a very nice car for the amount. Ouch. The only winners in a divorce are the lawyers. Oh, and greedy ex-wives. Evil or Very Mad

REPLIES:

Cobbie - I think I've lost all the weight off me I want to now. Any more and I'll look skeletal! Theoretically both me & the bike are now at optimum weight. Maybe catch u at OtilO as well....

Sue - Thanks... a very nice ride, let's hope the first of many!

I'd love to post up the route in 3D I was dragged round on Saturday on the bike by my landlord, but my head was so firmly glued to the few feet of tarmac in front of me I have no idea which way we went!

My landlord is fit. Clearly I am not.

42 miles....every hill in the area.... up and down the South Downs about 8 times....ouch.

After 3 hours I panted:
"how far is that, now? 50, 60 miles?"
"Nah, that's just 32 mate."
"oh. Sh1t."

In fact, the 42 miles did more ascent in that one trip than in the whole of my year's training in Norfolk - if I'd had that route to train on for last year's Norseman, I'd be the proud owner of at least a white T-shirt. Awesome stuff...

Frustratingly with the divorce and job-hunting I probably wont be around these parts for long, which is a shame, but I really now understand the value of hill training. I was pretty much in pieces all the way round, even though I thought I was fit. A very good lesson to learn. So, for 2010, absolutely without exception I am going to have to do routes like this every single week in the build and peak phase. Do that and I really have a chance at reaching my goal.

Anyway, that was the down side. The upside?

The bike. GORGEOUS!

Took a little bit to get used to the SRAM Red double-tap gear shifting, but it is so sweet. The front cog was tricky and I still didn't really get that sorted without leaving it rattling a little. Still, just the first ride out so I'll get that sorted. Otherwise, wow, fantastic ride - smooth, fast, just felt good. Even though I was in pieces on the hills, I could tell the Orca was willing me up the slope with each thrust of the pedals... Oh Pyrannean Carbon Joy!

I was excited to see the TdF stage today and see my bike being ridden by one of the teams in Orange (I forget - Cofidis?) - nice.

One final note for this entry, I see Cobbie's posted up an O-til-O thread. Pete, Philip & I had talked about this last year as a possible option for this year. Of course events on my side, and dodgy knees on the part of Pete & Philip put paid to that for 2009.... but 2010.... there's a thought....

REPLIES:

Cobbie - lol, happy to say it ain't a pile of poo, and certainly would take just a few more than a 'couple' of !

Sue - Three words at the root of all this: Post Natal Depression.

Bluepoolshark - ha ha, hands off my bike! Yes, mobile number the same - let's catch up.

Hi Folks

Just a quick entry today - more just a brief update 'cos I'm conscious I haven't been on for over a week now.

I had intended to go for a good bike-ride last Sunday, but a re-emergence of that damn bug I struggled to shake off, sank that idea. I woke on Sunday morning with a throbbing head (steady... Wink ) and a throat really sore.

By Tuesday it had worn off so I planned a run. Two factors, of course, then conspired to rob me of that pleasure; 29+ degrees (ok, I'm a wimp!) every day, plus also a pretty bitter week on the divorce front. An awful lot of legal nastiness occurred this week which has reached a bit of a head today.

However, today we may actually have made a small breakthrough... my wife seems to have suddenly become reasonable about a few key battlegrounds and may, actually, meet me in the middle (at last). I've been here before so before I put up the bunting and get excited that we may have light at the end of our tunnel, I'll wait and see and believe it when it actually happens.

Still... let's see. If we can't agree the principal points in the next 7 days then we'll be staring at each other over a Courtroom on 13th July for our first (of what could be many) hearings... which could go on over the next 9-12 months. Sadly, that's when it will really get very nasty - not good for the children, but I don't have a choice but to start retaliating with some very unpleasant stuff if she doesn't see sense. (Please, see sense, girl!!!)

Anwyay, one little highlight to come: the landlord came round yesterday and he's a big cyclist - did a couple of the Alpine Stages last summer for fun so he's big on hills. He invited me out for a 40 mile hilly route on Saturday morning so I've accepted. [/gulp] Shocked

Will be the first trip out on the new bike. At last Exclamation

Will let you all know how it goes...

Hope you're all enjoying the weather - bit hot to train but so nice for some sunshine at last.

REPLIES:
Sorry I've been slack in these over recent weeks but I promise I'll get back to it now that (hopefully) things may be slowly improving in my life!

Slacko - This w/e's hilly route I am especially looking forward to - I have lost the equivalent weight of my bike off my body - so basically now it'll be like I'm riding the perfect bike - ie weightless!

Nick_N - Yep, shame I'm not still in N Yorks, would've been v happy to join you! Late-season race is very attractive, if I can only sort this sh*t out quickly then def will be looking for an autumnal run out...(was originally down to do Wetherby in June, but of course had to pull out... is there anything up your way in Sept/Oct?)

sailbird - thanks for the kind words and yes, great pic!

good4age - cheers... the picture pretty much reflects how I'm feeling at the moment. If you've see the film (300) it's very powerful and stirring, and the context of this screenshot is a perfect summary of my current situation!

Cobbie - Nope, wife still here under the same roof until we resolve this (and it could take 9-12 months Shocked ).
Totally agree with your suggested training plan and that's pretty much what I'm going to aim for, thanks for that.

Sue - yep, it's a long, slow road back but I've got the time and, more importantly, the motivation growing again... so if things don't worsen again, I'm on the way. Watch this space!

Well... the days march on, each with its own little challenge...

The police involvement count is now up to 3 - I'm becoming quite familiar with Her Majesty's force now, as my dear wife trumps up more and more ridiculous allegations against me... the good thing is each is swatted aside by the law as worthless and timewasting as the last. There clearly are no depths that my wife is not afraid to plumb...

The legal process is dragging on (thanks to her pointless and irrelevant attempts to continually blacken my name) and we may be stuck under the same roof for 9-12 months, according to the lawyers. If you want to know what hell is like, come round for tea. Smile

Anyway, enough of the dirty laundry. More positive things to report at last!

You will know from my earlier entries that training has completely ceased - you only need to look at the 'Training Log' to the left to see the catastrophic fall-off in dedication.

I have also been monitoring my weight since all this nastiness kicked off in my life - take a look at this:

Basically, in 4 weeks, I went from a steady 73kg to 66kg. That's a 10% loss in bodyweight in 28 days....

I also picked up a terrible bug which travelled from being a cold in my nose, Southwards until I lost my voice for several days, then down onto my chest. I was coughing deep lungfuls of pain for over 2 weeks, pains in my chest etc. I was in a real state. It took me 4 weeks to shake it off, in the end. One morning I looked in the mirror and was horrified. I had that hollow-cheeked, sunken eyed look of a terminally ill person.

I went to the doctor, told him everything (and I mean everything). Next to the 'Big C', he confirmed, stress is one of the most potent triggers of weight loss. He wasn't at all surprised at my condition - checked me out, and his advice was to get back training. Gently, not to overdo it, but on Doctor's orders I have to get off my fat ar*se and do something!

It's taken a few days, but...

Yesterday I picked up my trainers, emptied out the woodlice and families of spiders that had taken residence in them (that's not an exaggeration, by the way) and set off for a 6 miler.

It wasn't easy, to be honest, the heart rate was understandably much higher than usual, but in fact I felt ok. Climbing the hills, my HR spiked very quickly to over 170bpm, forcing me to walk each time. But otherwise, at 'cruising speed' I felt good, and ended up doing 8.1 miles. I was pretty sore towards the end and came in in a slow time.... but it didn't matter. I was back!

I'm not sure how often I'm going to be going out training, but that's not really the point at the moment. Just going out and doing a run did me a lot of good (although my sore legs today beg to differ!).

It's also difficult to know what sort of training regime to follow now - having the Norseman and following Don Fink's program gave really good structure and focus to my training. Without that, and Norseman 2010 so far away I don't have that sort of regime yet.

Anyway, as long as I just get out every now and again whilst the life-crap is unresolved, should hopefully get me through ok, and as we approach Norseman 2010 it'll be (hopefully!) back to the 30 week training plan - this time working from a bigger base.

A quote that has been with me all my adult life:

"A journey of a 1000 miles begins with but a single step".

I've had confirmation from Rolf, the race organiser, that they have deferred my entry for the Norseman until 2010.

So... Norseman 2010!

In the context of all that is going on it may seem pretty minor, but for me that is the only thing at the moment I have to focus on and look forward to. It's a long way off, but it is a pinprick of light at the end of a long, dark tunnel so, underneath, I'm excited. I have no idea where I'll be, or what my circumstances will be... but touch wood...

My gorgeous new bike I bought the day before my life fell apart still remains in the garage, untouched. Here she is, all set up ready for this year's Norseman:

Orbea Orca 2009
SRAM Red Groupset
Mavic Carbone wheels

So, all being well, she is going to be my trusty steed for Norseman 2010.

Many people have been saying to use my pent-up anger/depression on training... not possible. I've tried but my mind is just so not into it. It just proves to me how much of our sport is in the head - I just have nothing, nothing at all in me that wants to train. I sat on my turbo bike a couple of weeks ago but hated every minute of it. Went for a 10 miler and beat my PB again by nearly 2 minutes. It did nothing for me... I just have too much sh*t in my head at the moment, too much legal and nasty stuff going on that it is actually just serving as a distraction to me.

I need to clear all this sh*t from my plate first and re-establish my life. Then, with no demanding wife holding me back, I will be back to training with a f*cking vengeance.

It's a bold, optimistic goal, but now my new target:

Norseman 2010 - BLACK T-shirt.

I owe it to myself. I owe it to Pete/Bluepoolshark for his support, and I owe it to each of you guys who have helped and supported me morally through this year during the great 'ups' and the grim 'downs'.

It's going to be a tough year, but I'm ready for it now.

Well, I'm still here.

I'm cowering behind a 6' sandbag redoubt, bleeding, wounded, alone with my old musket poking outwards whilst 4000 Zulus circle and launch wave upon wave of attacks....

The odds are stacked appallingly, but while each fresh assault wounds me deeper, the redoubt stands, and so do I.

Metaphorically speaking, that's where I am. In reality, I've undergone the most awful sequence of stuff, some of which is just too grim to even put in here. The most awful, awful allegation was made against me a couple of weeks ago by my (soon to be ex) wife which were investigated by the police and found to be completely false. That was one enormous assault repelled, but I can't begin to tell you the wounds that left on me. I can tell you it will take a lifetime to psychologically get over that one.

The divorce is becoming terribly, terribly acrimonious. My wife has trawled my bank statements for the last 10 years and emails to dig up as much dirt on me and my whole family as possible.

How can you stand at the altar with someone just 5 years ago, vowing 'til death us do part' and end up like this? wow, it's a life lesson on humanity.

The legal fees are going to clean out my life-savings so sadly I'm going to emerge from this with no children and no money either. There's no happy ending to these sorts of situations, sadly, but I've accepted that and will rebuild my life with a blank canvas.

My old company tried to screw me, but I have now appealed to them personally, knowing my circumstances and they have given way to me. Thank you to them. Another desperately dark assault on the old sandbag redoubt that has been repelled.

The other bad news is that, in the circumstances, I have now withdrawn from the 2009 Norseman. I have emailed the race director today stating this.

However, I haven't asked for a refund. I have asked him to defer my entry to 2010.

Unfinished business, remember. Unfinished business.

I'm riding out this carnage in my life and I will rebuild somewhere else, a new life, a new location.

I'll keep you all posted. Thank you to each of you for your kind comments of support - it really, genuinely, means a lot to me.

Chin up. The old musket's reloaded for the next assault...

Well, we go from one crisis to the next.

My company has just contacted me to 'discuss' the severance terms. I should be on a 3 month notice period plus I was hoping for a little 'ex gratia' payment to soften the blow.

Nope. They are giving me 1 month's notice. This goes against my contract although they are trying to tell me they 'extended my probation period'. As I have only been with them for 8 months I don't qualify for 'unfair dismissal' etc.

I now have to take this to employment tribunal.

In practical terms, this means they dragged me down to one of the most expensive parts of the country, I'm locked into a very expensive rent on the house and my revenue ceases on June 15th.

I appealed to them to be reasonable, particularly knowing my circumstances. I just got a very formal response - sue us if you don't like it. Believing I won't have the means to pay for a solicitor.

W@NKERS.

Financially I'm now in deep sh1t. We've just handed notice in on the house and will be out in about a month. We still don't know where to go.

All this and trying to negotiate a divorce as well. Charming.

They say bad things come in threes. I'm no exception. I've been expecting the phone to ring for the last few days to say someone's died or it would be a health issue or something.

If only.

[I've come back this morning and edited this paragraph out which explains what has happened, because I just can't contemplate it. I spent last night crying through the night, praying I was stuck in a bad dream. When I can face it, if things work out, I will put back what was originally here. All I will do is leave the original last line in: ]

God help me.

Who on earth is this Gus anyway ?

After being VP Africa for an oil exploration company in Surrey the recession kicked me out and sitting twiddling my thumbs!

I had an awful French, gold-digging wife who developed mad cow disease, divorced me after just 5 years and walked away with my two baby daughters a very wealthy woman, leaving me facing bankruptcy. Sadly we learn by our mistakes.

Got into Tri's after my 53yr old boss in Geneva shamed me into doing one after he completed the Geneva. Once started, quickly hooked!
