Who on earth is Gus?

North Yorkshire born & bred, but spent five years in the dark, wet depths of Cumbria as a teenager. Loved those fells!

Newcastly Poly for one year, but got kicked out for enjoying myself too much, then North Staffs Poly (yuk) for 3 years studying Estate Management. Ended up as a Chartered Investment Surveyor for 10 years, living in London, Leeds and finally Glasgow (lived overlooking Loch Lomond.... most beautiful place on earth).

Career-changed during my mid-life crisis at 30: Threw away a high-flying career to go to Plymouth Uni for 1 year then spent the next 5 years working offshore all round the world in the oil industry.

Back onshore in 2003: Marketing Manager in Norwich, then Geneva, then Lowestoft (wow, glamorous!). Currently VP Africa for an oil exploration company in Surrey. Talking of glamorous, these days my regular trips are to Nigeria, Eq Guinea and Angola... now I bet that's got you envious.

I have a lovely French wife with a Gallic temperament and a gorgeous 2yr old daughter who speaks better French than me.

Got into Tri's after my 53yr old boss in Geneva shamed me into doing one after he completed the Geneva. Once started, quickly hooked! My current 'mid-life crisis' as my dear wife keeps referring to it as.

100 Posts on the blog!

Last week was an interesting training week. I had the first swim of the year (and for the last 3 months) on Wednesday which, as you can read below, was not a pleasant experience. It's Monday now and I'm still stiff in the shoulders!

Sunday I was planning my usual 8 mile run when the landlord appeared at the door. He's a big cyclist, and after chatting for an hour or so about epic cycling trips I was inspired to great things.

So.... hauling the faithful old Trek out of the garage... no, I didn't go out for a ride - it was dark, cold and wet Razz .

Instead I put up the turbo in little Emily's playroom, mounted the faithful steed and spun out 1 hour in Zone 2. Yes it hurt. Yes someone could've had a shower underneath me I was leaking so much, but I did it!

Additionally, I enjoyed spinning in front of the telly - "The Sea Wolves" was on Ch5: Gregory Peck, David Niven, Roger Moore, Trevor Howard... you name 'em, they were in it. Classic!

Don Fink's book, "Iron Fit" arrived and I took a look at the 'Just Finish' program...
Very Happy Very Happy Very Happy
Oh dear, like I have time for that.

So, I'm instituting the Gus 'Ah what the hell, do what you can and let's see what happens' program. It's copyrighted so let me know if you want a copy Wink

Last night, I achieved 2 hours sleep. Amandine has a cold and was taking great pains to ensure we know about it.

I could go on, but....zzzzzzzzzz

RESPONSES:

Vickich - Ooh a fan of Dallas - me too! (oops did I just publicly admit that?). And yes, in my head I swim like Phelps. Too bad my body doesn't agree Smile

Cobbie - I'll quote you on that in a few weeks time if it still hurts! Hope you're right.....

Bluepoolshark - It was reading your blog that pushed me to get my *rse back in the pool, so it's all your fault Wink . And yes, don't wait up for me to get to T1... It'll be dark by the time I (if ever) get to Zombie Hill!

Slacko - interesting, I hope it works the same for me... will keep watching.

Sue - Faster than you? I thought I was the slowest on TT?! Damn, I've lost the one thing I was better than everyone else at - being slow!

Its been 3 glorious months out of the pool.

Today, was inglorious. I did my first swim session since October, and it was a pretty scarey wake-up call. The goal was to do a slow and steady 2000m.

At 1000m I was in pieces. My arms and shoulders were screaming at me to stop, I was stopping at the end of each length for an extra breath... Shocked and pyschologically I felt as low as Ulrica's boobs.

How could I lose so much fitness so quickly?

I resolved to at least make Olympic distance (1500m) to salvage some vestige of pride, but each length was a mini-battle in a long and ponderous campaign that was hard fought. The old guy I was sharing the lane with was slapping around like a sunfish, yet even he overtook me every few lengths. Oh the ignominy!

At 1500m, strangely, I felt a lot 'looser' and much of the pain had receded (amazing what a rush of endorphines can do!) so I thought "go for the 2000m".

54 minutes 31 seconds later, I did it.

6 minutes slower than my last effort three months ago...it's a real eye-opener how quickly I've lost my swimming - I sense a very long, uphill struggle coming.

Here's the thing: if I swim just one session a week, then there's only 28 swimming sessions to go to Norseman.

I need to get my *rse in gear.

Evil or Very Mad BIG STYLE Evil or Very Mad

RESPONSES:

Cobbie - Thanks. Running away can be tricky, though. West Africa is not conducive to just popping out for a jog!

GreenDragonfly - I am paranoid about mozzies. The only one of God's creatures I would happily eradicate!

Vickich - I'm sorry! (but not too sorry Wink ) I was so chuffed! Stick at it, everyone on here is really supportive so if I can do it, so can you!

Sue - clean, crisp days in the morning sun... steaming breath and crisp underfoot... now that is running heaven...

Hat's off to me, I managed two runs this week! Things are looking up.

Still flush with the excitement of discovering my bad mathematics had nearly denied me of the vast improvement detailed in the last entry, I decided to add to the 'tempo' run of Thursday, with a long, slow distance run on Sunday.

It was very chilly - hat & gloves were required. (Oh, how the Northerner in me cringes and sneers 'pathetic wimp' Razz ). Still, it was a tough run... I was still sore from the tempo run on Thursday so the legs felt leaden all the way round. I just really struggled to swing them rythmically...

Through my head, I'm thinking "run like an Ethiopean... relax... swing the body, maaaan...." but genetics (and unfitness) denied me such pleasures and instead it was just a brutal battle of will to keep going, particularly up the hills.

In the end I did 8.1 miles in 1hr 31m. I was disappointed until I checked that I'd just knocked 6 minutes off the time I did it last time... Shocked Very Happy Admittedly, last time I was navigating the route for the first time, and I did have an energy/nutrition crisis at mile 6, but still! Very pleased indeed with that.

Work:

The boss called me in, the other day. "Uh oh... here we go..."

"You are aware that times are tough, and that the big project has been cancelled... etc etc..."

My mind instantly started listing the recruitment agents I had to call, the companies I would have to approach with my CV again....

"...but we've decided to change your role to business development..."

"What? I still have a job?"

"Yes, for the time being".

Thank heavens for that.... ok so the company is still flirting with Administration and it still could happen any time, we're still here! The one downside to the new role is I will be required to be doing an awful lot more travel... which is extremely disruptive not only to the domestic life but to the training regime as well... Also, the destinations will still be the glamorous high-spots of Angola, Nigeria, Congo etc...

So I'll have to pack my AK47 along with trainers again...

Lottery, anyone...?

RESPONSES:

mountaingirl - Thanks - very pleased indeed! Just 7 months to go, though...

Sue - yep, 3 kids plus 2 of our own adds up to a very tough weekend!

Slacko - will be looking forward to following Fink's program - watch this space!

GreenDragonfly - ta very much!

I was lazy over the weekend (again) but to be fair I had a mate round with his 3 children all weekend so no chance to really do any training.

However, today I did my 'work 4-miler' at lunchtime (same as per 17th December below).

This includes 2 reasonably tough hills, so 10 minute miles is not too disastrous (39 minutes 41s to be precise for 3.944m, ave HR 166bpm). I ran it as a Tempo run - inspired by a current Training thread in the forum that enthuses on the benefits of tempo running. Anyway, pleased with today's performance.

More importantly, I miscalculated my timings on last week's run; I didn't do 10+min miles, in fact I did 9 min 28 sec miles - a significant improvement! This means over that relatively short distance I can now manage sub-10 min/miles.... this is a BIG STEP!

Now, to apply that to 26 miles.... Shocked Very Happy

Oh, just to add, I've just ordered Don Fink's book - "Be Iron Fit: Time-efficient Training Secrets for Ultimate Fitness". Again inspired by a thread in the forum - many obviously are using this book for IMUK. I'll give his training plans a go...

I'll let you know what it's like when it arrives!

RESPONSES:

Vickich - 30 months?!!!! OMG please do not scare me with possibilities like that! Have a great '09 yourself.

Sue - stressed and tired are the words.... it was another 4.30am start this morning. Good news is - as per above, in fact there are the first signs of spring in my training!

"I spy, with my little eye, something beginning with 'Wuh'."

"One".

My 3yr old daughter comes up with a much more satisfying answer than 'water', as we played I-Spy in the bath last night Laughing

Xmas is over, it's the New Year. So what gives?

1. Training is going slowly; I forced myself out on an 8 miler just before Xmas - it was a slow and painful affair. After 5 miles I was starving and I really started to run out of energy. Still, managed to run all of the way at a slow pace, even the hills. It was hard, however, to keep the HR down - definitely need to do some extra work in higher zones now.

Which lead on to a quick run I did at my parents house over Xmas - a 5.4 miler during which I 'burst' 4 sections of half a mile. It hurt, but then it was supposed to.

Depressing thing was, though, that my overall pace was still 10+ min miles even including the 'burst' 2 miles... mmm, still a lot of work to do.

Also managed to persuade an old friend of mine, Wilf, to get into Triathlon at last. He's a hell of a lot fitter than me so its about time. We're both going to do the Ripon Oly next June.

2. Domestic: the wife spent most of Xmas arguing with my Mother (as did I, actually), so we ended up cutting our stay short. God don't you just love Xmas? Very Happy

3. Work: Things looking extraordinarily shakey and my position looks more and more tenuous by the day. Just waiting for the "can you step into the boardroom" summons any day now...

4. Sleep: what's that? I'm still only getting around 4hrs a night as our dear not-so-newborn-anymore still likes to scream the house down between 12am and 5am. Ohhhhhh what I would do for some sleeeeeep.

I actually fell asleep here at my desk at work an hour ago. Just put my head down to 'rest my eyes' and before I knew it I was jumping awake as one of the secretaries appeared. ooops.

I am just so, so tired.... Crying or Very sad

I blink for two minutes and when I look again I've slipped onto the 2nd page.... has it really been that long?!

Anyway...

Baby summary:
No sleep, wife still struggling, up since 4.30am.....

Work summary:
The 'new' job I'm in may be coming to an end in January... Great. I've only been in it 4 months and I may be out on my ear for the second time in less than 12 months! Turns out there's an awful lot they didn't tell me when I took this job in August - like if the company didn't repay their investors $15m by Dec 31st then it's all over. It turns out, we can't meet the payment... so it may all be over!

[Simon & Garfunkel] Hello Dole queue, my old friend.... [/Simon & Garfunkel]

Training summary:
HOIST THE FLAGS!!!! GUS DID A RUN TODAY!!!!

Yep, I finally got off my fat *rse, brought my running kit into work and did a hilly 4-miler:

Took me just over 49 minutes, but that included nearly 10 minutes getting lost! I also pointedly ignored my HR - which in fact averaged 166bpm and peaked at 183bpm as I really pushed up the hills. I'm leaving the LSD to the weekends, in the hope I can actually get away from the domestics at the w/e!

Here's the profile (elevation a little exaggerated):

Total Ascent: 184m
Total Distance: 3.944 miles

I'm definitely feeling it this afternoon, but psychologically this has given me a real boost.

Well, I'm back! oops, I nearly slipped off the front page...

Want to know how I feel? Take a look at these eyes:

You could go on holiday to Cairo for a month with those bags.

Yep, dear Amandine is clearly allergic to sleep. I've been averaging 3hrs a night for the last 5 weeks, before getting up at 6am to go to work. In reality, I'm usually awake from 3am, she stops screaming at 6am when I run the bath and off I go for the day! Any teenage girls thinking about getting pregnant should come and stay with us a couple of nights - you'll see the teenage pregnancy rate plummet after that, trust me.

I can understand why they use sleep deprivation as torture. I am absolutely KNACKERED Exclamation .

Other issues:

1. Post Natal Depression. ARGGGGGHHHHHHHHHH!

2. I shouted at my Mother in Law, who's been staying with us for the last 6 weeks, to "shut the f*ck up" on Saturday night.

I had to apologise on Sunday for "speaking to her as if she was a dog" Very Happy

3. With the lack of sleep and stress, my immune system has gone on holiday. Consequently, I've lost my voice, coughing my guts up, feeling like sh*te 24hrs a day non-stop for 5 weeks...

4. Training? What's that?

My trainers are currently providing accommodation to a small family of rodents. My bike has disintegrated into a small pile of rust-coloured dust in the garage its been so long since it saw use. Swimming? it's been so long since I've been in a pool I think I've forgotten how to swim.

5. Norseman

So far away, yet so close.... I'm now on the official entry list. Smile

I'm also in one of the top 100 Norseman photos:

Philip on the left and Bluepoolshark (Pete) on the right. All of us sitting very nervously on the ferry at about 4am on the way out to the start... I think this was the worst part of the whole day (apart from the very last bit).

6. TT Awards

I was nominated for Best IM report for my Norseman effort. Thank you to everyone who actually read it, and an even bigger thank you to those who voted for it. Much appreciated! Congrats to Cleo on winning the category.

(The cynic in me does wonder how many actually read all three nominations or just voted for the person they knew best on the forum Very Happy ah, who cares)

7. Christmas Shopping

14 days until I start!

Merry Christmas to you all! (is it too early to say that?)

PS Responses:

Slacko - Thanks so much for the nomination - TBH that meant an awful lot more to me than winning it, strangely, cos it meant somebody really genuinely enjoyed the report!

Mrs Slacko
- No, not malaria, fortunately (phew!). Bless you for voting for me! & you are very welcome indeed to use your hypnotherapy if it works...can you do it virtually Shocked ? - ahhh calming thoughts arriving...thank y- zzzzzzzzzzz

Sue - the PND is not mine, but my poor wife's...but it's obviously infectious! Not too early? Good: HAPPY XMAS!

p00key - thanks... it took our first daughter 8-12 weeks before she 'settled down'... 4 weeks to go.... not that I'm counting.... Very Happy

GreenDragonfly - I'm hanging, thanks! There is light, somewhere, at the end of this tunnel....

Cleo - Thanks, and esp for the nomination & vote! The winner was well deserved.

And if I have to wait until her teenage years... Shocked Shocked Shocked argggghhh! Very Happy

Merry Xmas to you all! Put your feet up and get fat for a few weeks, its a holiday Very Happy

A quick one for obvious reasons:

1. Welcome to the world Amandine!

Can I also say that I do, admittedly, look in a worse state than my wife. Our other daughter decided to start throwing up at 1am the night before and didn't stop until we pretty much needed to set off for the hospital the next morning.... hence why I look a little jaded Very Happy

2. Entry confirmed to the NORSEMAN!!!

3. Been poorly this week - had tests for Malaria on Wednesday... Shocked .
Now that could be a problem Laughing .

Who on earth is this Gus anyway ?

After being VP Africa for an oil exploration company in Surrey the recession kicked me out and sitting twiddling my thumbs!

I had an awful French, gold-digging wife who developed mad cow disease, divorced me after just 5 years and walked away with my two baby daughters a very wealthy woman, leaving me facing bankruptcy. Sadly we learn by our mistakes.

Got into Tri's after my 53yr old boss in Geneva shamed me into doing one after he completed the Geneva. Once started, quickly hooked!
