Who on earth is Gus?

North Yorkshire born & bred, but spent five years in the dark, wet depths of Cumbria as a teenager. Loved those fells!

Newcastly Poly for one year, but got kicked out for enjoying myself too much, then North Staffs Poly (yuk) for 3 years studying Estate Management. Ended up as a Chartered Investment Surveyor for 10 years, living in London, Leeds and finally Glasgow (lived overlooking Loch Lomond.... most beautiful place on earth).

Career-changed during my mid-life crisis at 30: Threw away a high-flying career to go to Plymouth Uni for 1 year then spent the next 5 years working offshore all round the world in the oil industry.

Back onshore in 2003: Marketing Manager in Norwich, then Geneva, then Lowestoft (wow, glamorous!). Currently VP Africa for an oil exploration company in Surrey. Talking of glamorous, these days my regular trips are to Nigeria, Eq Guinea and Angola... now I bet that's got you envious.

I have a lovely French wife with a Gallic temperament and a gorgeous 2yr old daughter who speaks better French than me.

Got into Tri's after my 53yr old boss in Geneva shamed me into doing one after he completed the Geneva. Once started, quickly hooked! My current 'mid-life crisis' as my dear wife keeps referring to it as.

Just a quick update as I'm conscious I've slipped onto Page 2 again...

On the personal front, an awful lot has happened since my last entry. Sadly at this stage I can't share the horror that I have experienced in the last few weeks with you, as the legals are ongoing. Let's just say, a few people have seperately suggested that I write a book telling the story of what has happened - it is that unbelievable and horrifying.

All that I can tell you at this stage is that my ex-wife is currently refusing any contact with my children - it's been 2 months now. The stuff her and her Mother are subjecting me to would make your toes curl, and I just hate to think what my poor two little girls are being told. As per my earlier post, there are two seats being reserved in hell for my ex-wife and her mother.

I hope one day soon I can tell you all the tale. It'll leave you wide-eyed and shaking your head in disbelief, trust me.

Anyway....

I went through a phase a few weeks ago when I considered dropping out of the Norseman. With all that was going on, it was the most sensible thing to do. Fortunately I stuck to my guns, I kept the race as a focus in my life, so for the moment, game still on.

The training has obviously suffered, with big gaps here and there whilst I've been sorting my personal stuff out, but I have managed to at least keep some base training going. I've been relatively comfortable on the 15 mile runs on the weekend, and the 45 mile bike routes incorporating the big hill, Cairn o'Mount.

Two weekends ago, my mate Kevin (who's also doing the race) and I did our usual 45m circuit over the Cairn, into a head wind that was so strong even in lowest gear on my compact I nearly had to get off to push.... unbelievable. Also, the last 5 times round the route it's absolutely poured down with rain - really awful cycling weather. Maybe good training as I heard yesterday the long-range forecast is awful for the Norseman...

I did the 45m circuit on my own last Sunday, struggled painfully up the Cairn thinking what hard work it was that day, until about 50 yards from the top, looked down. I discovered I still had another gear spare! I was so pleased that my manic laughing and exultant shouts of "I've got another gear!" caused the whole car-park at the top to stand in a line and gape at me strangely as I pushed on through the rain, laughing like an insane escapee...

The open water swimming has been really good this year - done more in the last few months than the lsst few years put together. In a wee loch - Knockburn - Kevin and I spend each Monday night going round and round, each circuit being just under 700m. Last Monday was a slow, but steady 3500m and both of us emerged feeling ok... so I do hope that is helping for the Norseman.

Took the Orbea in for a service last week into our new LBS, but they are choca-block with bookings but a bit of begging and arm-twisting made them promise they'd have it back to me in time for Norway. Bloody hope so!!!

So went out on the trusty old Trek last night for a quick 20-miler... the first time on it in 6 months - which left me worried and confused. The Trek was always very comfortable, and so much so it felt 100% more comfortable, smoother, more solid than the Orbea. Arghhhh!!! I spent the entire 20 miles thinking, "Oh sh1t, have I just wasted a fortune on the Orbea and should I take the Trek to Norway instead?".... I came in 3-4 minutes slower than before so I'm hoping that it felt comfortable and nice cos I was just going slower!

Just 8 days to go until race-day now. Shocked

Quite scared....

RESPONSES:

p00key - Thanks for the moral support - it helps!

Loopmusic - well there isn't going to be any quick solution to this - and sadly my ex doesn't seem to worry about the best interest of the children... we all learn lessons the hard way, sadly. But, still hanging in there!

mdh - yep, you're on the right track....

Sue - all down to post-natal depression. She turned into a monster and for no reason turned her psychotic hatred towards me despite being a 'model' husband. The sad thing is the poor children....

I'm afraid the nightmare has begun again.

On Friday, I flew to Paris to pick up my daughter to bring her back to England and my parents for our week's summer holiday.

My wife refused to open the door, and told me she has reported me to the police. Her and her mother have once again made some horrific allegations about me.

The French police are now wanting to talk to me - I am in the process of finding a French lawyer to help me.

She has made it clear she wants me out of their lives and she is obviously prepared to stoop to the most inhuman methods to achieve that. How anyone could do this to another human being, I just cannot comprehend.

I wouldn't wish this upon my worst enemy.

I only pray that hell exists, because there is a place reserved for her and her mother for what they are doing to me.

Hi folks

Just a quick one - yes I know, I'm terribly behind on the blog, but been so horrendously busy with work etc.

Today managed a half-ironman (3500m open water swim in the loch - dear GOD it was cold Embarassed - 57 miles bike - hilly - and 11 miles hilly run).

Pretty sore, and shattered. Training recently has been badly affected with work/travel commitments so I did suffer.

However, swim was mediocre, bike went reasonably well, run not too good, but most importantly, got round in one piece.

2 months to go to the big day....

Embarassed

Ok, Gus is back!

New life
New location
New job

It's been a pretty tough run, but at last I managed to find myself a new job! The downside is it's in Aberdeen (brrrrrr) which is about as far from anywhere as the North Pole... admittedly not my first choice of location but... a job's a job so I'm grateful for that. Found a house in Stonehaven, a pretty little coastal town with an old harbour. The house is a bit 'Brookside' in that I can lie in bed and wave at the neighbours lying in their bed, so all very cosy and chummy Smile But more importantly, in the town are:

3 x fish & chips
2 x curry houses
1 x kebab
2 pizzas
1 x Chinese

Joy Very Happy

(You may have noticed ironman training for me doesn't include a strict nutrition regime)

Within a few miles of home I have.... HILLS... hooray! At last, something taller than a molehill that I can run and cycle up. A bit further afield and I have mountains... joy.

So it's not all downside up here.

My mate, Kevin, lives 5 miles away... regular readers may remember 18 months ago, Kevin was my support in the 2008 Norseman. Heís been up here for 5 years or so, so he knows the area well and knows loads of routes. Heís also signed up with me for the 2010 Norseman, so for once in my tri life I have a training partner on my doorstep. I have no excuses now!

The new job looks pretty committing, lots of travel etc so will be difficult to get a training routine sorted. However, as the training log shows on the left, Iíve managed to up the training to a new level at last. Still not as good as last year but at least better than 2008.

Iíve a new running route from home that Iíve now done a couple of times, 8 miles up the nearest hill and back (700í height gain) Ė a starter at least. I also unpacked the i-Magic a few days ago and rigged up the bike... what a pleasure to get that back up and running again. Managed 1hr 50mins last Sunday, struggling up the Grossglockner in Ďreal-life videoí... forgotten what hard work it was!

Found a pool near the new office Ė 25m at Robert Gordon University. Decent gym as well...also the scenery there is both fantastic and depressing; lots of 20yr old girls who are extremely fit, making me feel rather old and lame, but my they are pretty Very Happy

So, Gus is back in business. Iím absolutely broke (well, bankrupt is more accurate) but Iím starting over. The fundamentals are falling into place in my life again... life begins anew.
I darednít calculate how many days to Norseman 2010 yet... but the training routine is starting again, the mojo is ON FIRE, life is better...

August 7th 2010..... HERE WE COME!

REPLIES:

Loopmusic - cheers... yep, good news at last, so it's great to be back up and running again.

Sue - the motivation took a real knock, but yes, it's back.... it's tough being out of work for so long but fingers crossed life begins again!

Hi everyone

Don't worry - haven't given up on the blog...

Hopefully things happening in my life at last, potentially... but can't give any details yet hence why it's been so long since I've updated... but all hopefully will come more clear in a short while Smile

Training, as a result, is sadly taking a bit of a backseat, which is frustrating.... but motivation is still very much there, just need the environment and I'll be back in business....

Watch this space.....

Hi folks

A little bit lax in updating the blog in the last couple of weeks...

I managed to sneak away for three days skiing last week - it's only 2.5 hours away from where I'm staying here, just behind Nice. There's a lovely little resort up in the mountains called Auron, near to Isola 2000 which is extremely pretty, a small village around a little market square currently occupied by an ice rink for the winter. Went with a couple of friends of the family - bit of a boy's trip - and I was the youngest by about 20 years... but you wouldn't know it by the speed those two old boys shot down the mountain!

Weather was gorgeous - 3 days of clear blue skies, lots of snow and, unbelievably, the pistes almost to ourselves! Spent the time seeing how fast we could descend the black runs from top of the mountain back down to the bottom, with the benefit of not worrying about running into anyone. Fairly hairy at times, but great training for the thighs!

Back to reality, though, and managed to complete the week with a 10.5 miler to the top of the furthest hill in our area. A fabulous run winding up through the forest and hills...a total ascent of 2,500', with lots of 'sanglier' tracks everywhere, the views were breathtaking across the Gulf of St Tropez in one direction and far inland in the other direction. Also, further down the coast I could see the snowy peaks of the Alps, including the mountains upon which I'd torn down a few days earlier. The long, ascending track up to the peak that I ran up was eerily reminiscent of Zombie Hill on the Norseman, so I couldn't be training on better ground at the moment Smile

This week started slowly, as I've been inundated with workmen here doing all sorts of work on the house keeping me away from managing any training. Finally, though, did manage to get out for a run on Wednesday, a short, sharp tempo run up the hill... fortunately without suffering the weird head problem I suffered a while back whilst visiting the 'hurt box'.

Swimming again this evening.... and my god did I lose my rag in the pool with the French. Because I had a day taken up with workmen I was forced to attend the evening session... big mistake.

I gave so many French people some serious vocal as there was clearly some sort of conspiracy to swim into me and disrupt me at every turn.. Evil or Very Mad As a result my 2000m was 2 minutes slower - but much of that extra time was taken stopping and abusing them...

As for other stuff... things moving on in my life and possibly good news not a million miles away... but for reasons I'll explain in a couple of months time or so I can't put them in the public domain just yet... Wink

RESPONSES:

Sue - I've started stretching a little bit more now pre-swim but difficult to find what stretches to do....

Cobbie - Probably going to be back end-February, then will be on the move thereafter. Will PM you.

Another week and still a little disappointed with the level of training...

How on earth can I do any bike related training if I don't have a bike? Iím open to any suggestions...

It's really beginning to worry me as I'm probably going to be here at least another 4 weeks, and I was supposed to start the 30 week Norseman training program last week... and of course the bike is my weakest area, and the most important part of the Norseman!

Anyway... taking the running relatively gently still, after the weird head stuff before Christmas, but not running as much as I should be as I'm pretty tied up during the day with domestic stuff.

Swimming: I did 2000m again today, interested to see if last week's PB was a fluke... and it wasn't! I did pretty much exactly the same time today to within a few seconds - and I'm sure I lost count a few times and over-did the distance, so really chuffed about that. Rare piece of good news in the swimming discipline.

Here's a thing. I'm interested in people's thoughts about stretching:

1. Running
For 3 decades I religiously stretched for at least 10 minutes prior to any physical exercise/run. This was after school training, all the years I was in the TA, rugby games, you name it.
Drilled into me each time - stretch!

But around this time last year someone said 'STOP'! You'll injure yourself' - and described how the stringy bits should only ever be stretched when warm ie AFTER a run. I read around this subject quite considerably, and gave it a go with a lot of trepidation, changing the golden rule of an active lifetime.

One year later, and I literally barely do no stretching prior to any run and haven't done so since last year - and absolutely no ill effects. I always stretch after a run for 10+ minutes and combined with the relatively low-intensity training (Maffetone + Fink's) methods never suffer stiffness.

It's been a bit of a revelation, actually... all those decades of pointless stretching!

2. Swimming

I never stretch prior to a swim - mainly Ďcos I don't know how to! As a result the first 500-1000m tend to be a little painful in the arms as they stretch during the stroke.

Any thoughts on this?

RESPONSES:

adrian73 - Thanks for that, inspiring stuff!

mdh - thanks for the info, I've missed out on a couple of jobs up there already, came close but pipped at the post. Not the greatest place but hell, I don't have an awful lot of choice these days!

Bluepoolshark - Sadly, she speaks better French than I do! I had to use her at one stage to translate something... how humiliating is that!

Sue - Trying to get the ex to install a webcam -she's obliged to by the Court, but of course she's dragging her heels over it. Staying positive though!

Slacko - Thanks mate, yes I think a lot of people will be glad to turn their back on 2009! Here's to 2010.

sailbird - very interesting... there is migraine in the family, although I've never had it before... thanks for the pointer, will investigate further!

Diff'rent Strokes

Well, the new year starts and it's time to get off my fat backside and get some training going again...

My last run before Christmas was a simple run up to the top of the hill and back down again - pushing it as hard as I could. This included much of the ascent in Z3 and Z4. Felt ok and reached the summit 3 minutes faster than any previous run in Z2.

However, as I ran the last mile along the road at the bottom back home, weird stuff started happening. I started having a blind spot at the point of focus of my eyes - I tried to read a sign in the distance and I literally just couldn't see it. Everything around it, but just not that point. This freaked me a bit, so I began walking and took it easy until I got home.

At home, I started feeling pretty ropey. I got the 'focal point' vision back, but then I lost my peripheral vision completely. My left arm started feeling disassociated from myself (weird to explain that) - almost like it wasn't mine... and a pain in the head on the right side. I honestly thought I was having a stroke - I kept looking in the mirror to check my face was showing the classic signs, but fortunately nothing. It took a while to get over it, but I then had a headache for 24 hours afterwards.

This totally freaked me out, and I was too scared to raise my heartbeat since in case I keel over... Shocked

Being in France I didn't want to go to the Doc here, so I'll wait until I'm back in England.

Anyway, yesterday I thought I can't sit on my backside as the 30 week training program for the Norseman starts this week. So with an awful lot of trepidation I went for a run yesterday - about 6.5 miles with 1560' of ascent, but took it really easy - kept as close to Z2 as I could. I came home feeling ok, thank heavens.

I went for a swim as well, today, back in the 25m pool in St Maxime. Did 2000m and tried to take it pretty easy and relaxed... and beat my PB by 2 minutes?! Laughing I'm sure much of that is due to wearing the 'budgie-smugglers' which must be significantly more streamlined than the shorts, but even so, still 2 minutes faster than the last time in them... I'm sure I didn't mis-count the laps - if anything I thought I did 2 extra... so very, very pleased about that! It's even faster than last year when I was swimming twice a week and much fitter, so completely baffled about it TBH. I'll repeat the swim next week and see what happens to check it wasn't a fluke or a lap mis-count.

On the personal front, I had my eldest daughter to stay for 6 days over Boxing Day into the New Year which was really nice...but I was pretty angry that it took 5 days before she started speaking any English (despite my ex-wife promising faithfully she's practicing - but that's my ex-wife's word which I've learned means nothing). Anyway, also spent a few days in Paris with my youngest daughter who is growing fast (she's just over 1) - she's a little beauty with a gorgeous smile - heartbreaking not being there every day to see her grow Crying or Very sad ....

On the job front - still nothing and getting really down about it at times. Been out of work for a long time now and it really is so sapping in the confidence and positivity department. My life is just completely on hold - I just can't do anything until I find a job - I can't move on at all... very, very frustrating. Much as it's nice being looked after by the parents (and thank God for them otherwise I really would've been in the sh1t), I need my own place again and get my life back... need some money to come in again not only to start repairing my destroyed finances but to start being able to do stuff again, like my sports and social life etc... I can't even look for another woman as I don't know where the hell I'm going to end up geographically once I ever find a job... Mad It's amazing how much a foundation in life one's job is - without one everything in life seems just to be put on hold.

Anyway, I'm trying to focus on the few positives which manage to keep me going and just ride out the negatives. It does seem never-ending, this period of awful limbo in my life, but I know somewhere out there, the light at the end is approaching! (well, it better be Smile )

Just got to keep the head down, keep plodding step by step forwards, onwards and upwards!

PREVIOUS RESPONSES:
Carlito - It's good to be away, does help to clear the head a bit (and the weather's better Wink)

dr dre - having trained for the '08 Norseman in Norfolk, believe me, anything higher than a molehill is a good training run!

Sue - The rebuilding starts from here... just keep fingers crossed for a job...

Cleo - Mmmm, sausage... lol Happy Xmas to you too!

Mush Mush! - I've thought about the IVA, but still not sure yet which route to take... still weighing up the options (and not answering the phone!). Thanks for your kind words, they keep me positive and feeling happy!

adrian73 - Cheers - here's to 2010, lots of training, and finishing the Norseman!

Cobbie - yes, you're right about forcing yourself to keep exercising - trying my best on that front now. Planning to be back in the UK some time early Feb hopefully, so will keep you posted - would be good to do some Pennine bog-trotting together!

Who on earth is this Gus anyway ?

After being VP Africa for an oil exploration company in Surrey the recession kicked me out and sitting twiddling my thumbs!

I had an awful French, gold-digging wife who developed mad cow disease, divorced me after just 5 years and walked away with my two baby daughters a very wealthy woman, leaving me facing bankruptcy. Sadly we learn by our mistakes.

Got into Tri's after my 53yr old boss in Geneva shamed me into doing one after he completed the Geneva. Once started, quickly hooked!
