None at all, do less mountain biking, stay healthy, have a great winter with lots of swimming and running and smack it hard next year. (Oh yeah, once I've got these pesky 2 Ironmen out the way first). I've seen enough evidence that if I manage to do what my coach tells me then I may be able to make it to the back of the front of the pack instead of the middle of the pack! |

Well, running is coming back on track, now is the point when I have to ensure and not overdo it. Got a bit of an ITB injury during the Loch Ness marathon last month (early October) but managed to get through a 6 mile cross country at the weekend and then a hill run with one of the students from my course today.
I should have seen it coming, the declarations of "not being much of a runner", "not training much", but I dived straight in expecting an easy wee day. Half way up the first slope and here comes the at my best I was a 34 minute 10k man, I did a 4.30 1500 arghh, what have I let myself in for?!?!?
It wasn't too bad, my smash and grab hill style got me to the top first which meant that I could keep some respect for my fitness and let him run away from me downhill. It was a fantastic run and no mistake!
The view from the top of Dumyat over Stirling was great and a perfect training run for the weekend when I'll do the Tinto race. These are practice runs for the Bangc0ck challenge which Big Jock is organising (see http://www.entrycentral.net for entry details).
Am now avoiding the interval session tonight to stay away from overtraining, which is something I constantly must avoid when feeling healthy as it won't be long till I'm feeling unhealthy! _________________ 'Mon the Biff

Not what you think from the title....
So generally I'm a Westie, come from the West coast of Scotland, nice bit of wind etc and definitely no grouse or pheasant. But was down in the border at the weekend seeing the gf and went out for a cycle, Peebles to Selkirk via some hill or other, very nice for most of the way but a stretch of road really annoyed me.
Grouse, pheasant and all manner of low flyers kept disturbing me, they make a hell of a noise when they take off and they always do so very close to you. This came to a head when one had clearly only just been knocked by a car meaning it was flying about backwards half dead. Should you stop and put it out of its misery or carry on? Well, I carried on but then felt bad for not killing it... it was such a quandry.
Give me crows and seagulls and salty air anyday, OK, so a pleasant cycle (48 miles, 19.6mph) but dealling with the enhanced level of roadkill just annoys me. _________________ 'Mon the Biff

Couple of experiences this week that have been a little odd for someone who is quite fit.
1. I can't row, hadn't been on a rowing machine for probably a year now and decided I'd do a swift couple of k. It was horrible. Averaged 1.59 / 500m but that is about 5 seconds per 500 worse than before and in considerably more pain. How can you improve so much at aerobic sports and then not be able to do that?
2. Volleyball hurts your hands, and can also be quite taxing on the lungs. Just warming up for a gentle game of volleyball last night and I was out of breathe, maybe it was the stop-go nature of things (or the 34 mile bike before hand), but I felt knackered. Our game was a lot of fun, just the warm up was more taxing than I had envisioned.
Maybe it's just a case of doing things that are so the opposite of the long slow stuff that I'm used to... maybe I'm just not that fit.
Hmm... _________________ 'Mon the Biff

The real joys of student life

Well, student life is fun, official.
I am contracted to work 12 hours a week at my old job and this is our mid-semester week from uni. I was supposed to be working a bit more this week. Hmm...
Going back from lunch I realised what a nice day it was, so decided that was it for work (having already done my 12 hours), I'm off out on my bike.
34 sun soaked miles around the Trossachs, not bad for late late October. _________________ 'Mon the Biff

And then came into work at 0715 this morning... just to go on Tritalk pretty much, land of the walking dead in this office this morning, one chap who is quite thin but wearing trousers a bit big for him, don't think that he should have a mobile phone clipped to his trousers (they really might well fall down soon).
Other happening on way in was this lady who was parking her car who clearly thought she could swing it round in one fell swoop, well she swooped but the land rover in the way that was already parked didn't want to swoop out of it and crash bang wallop and we have a parking incident.
The most sickening thing was the noise it made but I can't explain why it was sickening, just made me uncomfortable. Maybe the thought of the poor person who innocently parked their car only to get a smack up the rear end from someone who was just being lazy.
If she's that careless when parking I'd really rather not be on the roads with the added complication of 2 way moving traffic. _________________ 'Mon the Biff

Where are we now...
Monday night was a swim Time Trial with the Tri club, OK, so at the moment I'm staying 60 miles from my tri club but thought I'd go down for a day out and to see my folks. 400m was the distance. Despite no interval work I was fairly happy I could stick in an improved time for the year as I'd been doing a lot of long stuff and therefore my swimming will have improved with it (OK, maybe I was just willing to hurt and knew it).
As I was doing the TT I was sure I was tapped on the head early, I'd only got to 12 lengths when I was tapped on the head, but hey, I could be wrong. Got out the water in 6:26, nah, that's far too quick I'm not going to take a minute off my best 400 without a year's training. So that was a bit of a waste. Unfortunately our timekeeper was left to the job and tried to do his best but he was only 10, and mistakes happen. I think he may have got confused when I lapped the guy who was doing it at the same time as me, not to worry. The other chap in the lane wasn't so pleased but it just didn't seem fair on the wee chap to be too disappointed.
Tuesday night - was through seeing the gf and she had a swim set to do so we went down to the local pool... do you do student rates? I asked as I hadn't tried this yet with my new student status... oh yes, half price lovely jubbly. Swam 1500m nice and steady 30 mins.
Now has anyone else noticed the thing with variable depth pools and apparently swimming a lot slower as you go further along? Well I noticed it on Tuesday. Some pools take you by surprise doing it and with others it is more pronounced, I guess as I do most of my swimming in a uniform 2m pool then I will notice this more than I should.
Wednesday night - let's go to the gym for a sweatfest was the plan and that's what I did. There isn't adequate air conditioning at our gym, so I figured I'd make some moats around the machines.
20 minutes on the cross trainer doing cross country - it's pseudo hill work but don't want to batter me knee too much.
3.5k on treadmill - it's pseudo running as I don't want to batter my knee, either I'm running slow at the moment or I really struggle to run on treadmills.
2k rowing - a good mate of mine has bought a concept 2 and lives on it, doing 38 minute 10k's most nights of the week, he never used to be better than me at rowing, but seems he is now. I struggled to hang on to 1.59 / 500 pace and I mean struggled throughout the 2k, but hey, I got rid of some of the sweat within me that clearly wanted to get out.
If Hywel wasn't winning prizes would he actually want to go to the gym, they are pretty unpleasant places. Slogging my guts out on a cross trainer only to look down next to me at the reclining bike, a chap there with a book and an iPod - either is a bit annoying when at a gym, particularly the book, but the combination of the two, the no resistance cycling at 15kph, I was getting a little angry.
Both of us will go home and say we've been to the gym, his lady will tell him that he is very fit as he "goes to the gym", mine will tell me to "get real and do some proper exercise".
Actually I guess I know which one I prefer, but the guy with the iPod is a bit deluded in my view. _________________ 'Mon the Biff

Then yesterday went out for 64 slow(ish) miles on the bike, average speed of 16.8mph. The group dictated the pace and I didn't get much say, but that was fine.
Today bought a new pair of shoes (North Face) for walking about in. And a new pair of 1100's to stick some elastic laces in and get rid of the dream of using DS Racers (OK, so they're light but I'm not).
Must get back to running, might even go for a jog before tonights swim time trial. Ahh the joys of the university mid-semester break.

May - October - But is it Charity?
Sat Oct 22, 2005 9:41 pm T-rex of Tri

OK, so go straight from May to Today with the blog, the stuff in the middle was good with a fantastic half ironman debut at the Scottish HIM and other major hightlights as well as overtraining low-lites.
Today I was out on the Braveheart Fund Charity Cycle Ride. The Braveheart Fund is a fund that has been established to support young and upcoming Scottish Cyclists to get funding to attempt to break into the pro-scene. Is it a charity? Well, I can't really see it as, we're paying these folk to get potentially rich... ah well it's a long argument. I don't mind paying entries to take part in their events or actively supporting the fund but I'm not asking other people for money, I feel bad enough when asking for sick kids charities.
Anyway, was more info on this charity on:
http://www.braveheartfund.com
What happened in the ride, well, it was a 50 mile ride, few hills around the old mining villages of Ayrshire. Fantastic marshalling and a well grouped ride. I was off in the 3rd group with about 30 of us getting let out. I had no idea who was in this group until someone mentioned that <namedrop>Graeme Obree</namedrop> was up front riding something typically unconventional. Yep, riding in our 20mph group was this chap with a bike that the SS would have been proud of, reversed cow handlebars. So we dropped him (well sort of).
Then on one downhill I jumped a few places up the group and there were these folks with jerseys of the fund on. Quite cool I thought, good to see that they're giving their own money to the fund. Then we got further down the road and they're wearing VIP numbers. So that will be <namedrop>Chris Hoy and Sean Kelly</namedrop>. Quite amazing!!! Chris was a joy to draft off, those thighs keep all the wind off! Sadly he didn't do a 1km spell up the front but I think I could have stayed on him!
Chris and Sean left our group as we came to a fairly silly hill wishing us luck and boy was it needed, the no racing policy was dropped when the VIP's left our group to see other groups behind us. So smack bang and a hill. After being initially dropped 3 of us worked together to get back on the group. And we rode round the rest of the way in a group of about 20.
There was another chap out there with the VIP tag on who apparently rides for the Recycling.co.uk team but I have no idea who he was. The Zipp 404's said to me that he was having an easier time than I was on my Steel Raleigh winter bike (the amount of carbon on show was obscene for October, I hope it wasn't their winter bikes!).
Thankfully not the usual road race mentality but a fairly sharpish run out for October, and a bit of star-spotting. A fun day!
So that was the day that was, the fund helps all sorts of cyclists in Scotland and Aileen McGlynn (Paralympic gold medallist on a tandem) was out there as well, so it does have distinctly worthy elements over getting our boys into the pro-peleton (although it would be great to follow some of our boys into that sort of thing).
Sorry for the ramble, but this is my blog and I can have a good ramble.
